Homesickness can be terrible to deal with but with good home cooked Portuguese foods prepared from Portuguese recipes can help in banishing the blues for anyone missing their beloved Portugal. If you are a part of the Portuguese Diaspora working in Australia, you already know how difficult it can be to find authentic home cooked meals.

For hardcore enthusiasts, it’s difficult to find authentic Portuguese food that has not be contaminated with Spanish or local cooking styles. But Gloria’s Portugese Restaurant in Sydney is one place where you will not be disappointed and enjoy the warm family style welcome you receive every time you sit down to eat.

What Makes Portuguese Dishes Unique?

Portugal was invaded regularly over the centuries by Arabs, Moors, Germans and many more cultures. Each culture left its own unique imprint on the country in the form of exotic local spices and herbs which were used in the foods. A range of local ingredients in the form of fish, chicken, seafood, pork and meat were cooked together to create unique signature dishes.

Fish in any form was a particular favorite with the locals due to the proximity of the sea and the huge natural coastline enjoyed by the state. The people were also expert sailors and Portuguese ships sailed all over the world exploring and conquering several island nations.

Salting foods is very common in Portuguese recipes

They were also experts in preserved foods and local cooking is always filled with salted fish, preserved meats, sausages, hams, and wonderful local varieties of cheese. Over the years, the Portuguese also imported herbs and spices from their far-flung dominions resulting in a very varied cuisine. They also left their mark on several local countries and sometimes it’s very easy to confuse Spanish, Indian and even Brazilian food as Portuguese food. For this explicit reason, amateur chefs might have set up restaurants all over the world promoting their restaurants as authentic Portuguese recipes and food but for locals, the food will never match up.

On this basis, Gloria’s Portugese Restaurant wins hands-down. Their unique Portuguese recipes are authentic and a genuine home based style comes through. Authentic preserved foods, specific local ingredients and cooking utensils like the calvados and an eye for detail are completely evident. Be sure to check out our menu here.

Tell us what you think…

I might be wrong but Gloria's is the oldest Portuguese eatery in Petersham, sort of like the pioneers. I often go to Glorias for a light snack like a rissole or steak sandwich and a coffee.

The service is friendly as its truly family owned and operated and the ambience is something straight outside a Portuguese eatery back home, chatter, laughter and personality in all ways. Food is best described as urban Portuguese cuisine and the traditional Portuguese rolls something special.
