Look No Further Than Gloria’s Cafe For The Best Portuguese Tarts In Sydney

Gloria’s Cafe in Petersham sells what many people claim are the Best Portuguese Tarts In Sydney. Portuguese tarts were first made in the 18th century in Lisbon by Catholic monks. They were sold at the Casa Pasteis de Belem, a pastry shop located outside the convent. Their popularity spread throughout the country and sprang up in people’s homes and bakeries. The monastery closed down but the tarts continued their culinary journey. It is now believed that tarts are sold in every pastry shop in the world that has Portuguese descendants. The sugar and egg treats are a delight for everyone, young and old.

How are Portuguese tarts made?

The dessert item is a type of egg tart pastry the size of your hand. They have a pie-like crust or puff pastry shell and the filling is usually a soft, custard texture, sometimes even appearing to be like crème brulee. To get their rustic look, the filling is made in a bowl over boiling water instead of simmered in a pot. The egg yolks give the pastry its trademark golden appearance. Gloria’s Cafe does serve other desserts besides the tarts although they are a definite customer favourite.

The history behind Gloria’s Cafe and the passion behind the food

I might be wrong but Gloria's is the oldest Portuguese eatery in Petersham, sort of like the pioneers. I often go to Glorias for a light snack like a rissole or steak sandwich and a coffee.

The service is friendly as its truly family owned and operated and the ambience is something straight outside a Portuguese eatery back home, chatter, laughter and personality in all ways. Food is best described as urban Portuguese cuisine and the traditional Portuguese rolls something special.
